A bitter-sweet comedy about old friends, growing old together.

This bitter-sweet comedy is set in a retirement/nursing home and revolves around two residents: Cooper (who has chosen not to live with his daughter and family to avoid his perceived indignity of depending on them) and his friend Aylott.  Together they face the challenges posed by the ageing process - the forgetfulness and the physical deterioration – and dispel some of their worries of what awaits them with humour and wit, aware that life is more easily endured if treated as a comedy.

Director’s Notes:

“Sundays” is a poignant play that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride - there are many laughs, a look into a possible personal future that we may not want to see, and maybe some tears too.  There are touching moments as Cooper’s protective shield of acid wit is lowered in scenes with Nurse Wilson and Mrs. Baker, the cleaning lady. Cooper does not look forward to his daughter and son-in-law’s visits on the first Sunday of each month, but that too reaches some resolution.

The author, Bob Larbey was born in South London and is one of Britain's foremost and funniest scriptwriters.  He may be best known for the highly acclaimed television series ‘A Fine Romance’ starring Dame Judi Dench and Michael Williams, for which he won both the Broadcasting Press Guild Award and the Pye Award for Best Comedy of 1982.  A Month of Sundays won the London Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy of 1986 and has been performed around the world.  The play was adapted to television by the author as the TV movie “Age-Old Friends” which won two Emmys in 1990

Director’s Bio:

Norma Cummings has enjoyed being involved with amateur theatre, both on and off stage, for close to 20 years, and for the last few has spent her theatre time here at the Studio Theatre.  She directed her first full-length play “You Say Tomatoes” last season and is looking forward to the very different challenges of bringing “A Month of Sundays” to life for Perth audiences.
