Session 3: Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 pm

Awards Brunch: Sunday, November 13 at 11:00 am

We at the Studio Theatre are proud to be once again hosting the Eastern Ontario Drama League One Act Play Festival, where nine community theatre companies from all over Eastern Ontario present their finest short plays in three sessions on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening.

Studio Theatre Productions is pleased to be presenting 2 plays this year: Norm Foster’s romantic comedy The Christmas Tree and a reprise of Act 1 of the heartwarming Mail-Order Annie, which we presented as a full play in our summer season. It is interesting to note that Carl Cashin, the author, originally wrote Mail-Order Annie as a one act play, but added two more acts because his audiences wanted to know what happened next!

We are pleased to confirm that the following Community Theatres, in alphabetical order, will be presenting their One Act Plays during the festival:

  • Highlands Little Theatre, Haliburton
  • Kemptville Players, Kemptville
  • Ottawa Little Theatre, Ottawa
  • Peterborough Theatre Guild
  • Studio Theatre Productions, Perth
  • Tara Players, Ottawa
  • Theatre Night in Merrickville
  • Valley Players, Almonte

ABOUT THE EASTERN ONTARIO DRAMA LEAGUE

The Eastern Ontario Drama League is an umbrella organization representing community theatres from Haliburton to Cornwall, Cobourg to Ottawa. EODL fosters development and interest in the performing arts. It serves as a resource centre for theatre activities in Eastern Ontario, and provides community theatre groups with a communications medium throughout the province. EODL promotes artistic and technical standards, and encourages education in theatre arts. A program of competitive drama festivals is a principal means of advancing these aims and The One Act Play Festival in November is one of these.

ADJUDICATOR:

This year EODL is very pleased to introduce the Festival Adjudicator, Chris Worsnop.

Chris Worsnop has been connected with community and student theatre for more than 50 years. In that time he has done almost all things theatrical, playing all kinds of roles on stage, dramatic and musical, professional and non, and doing all kinds of backstage work as well. He has directed, written scripts, worked as a play polisher, presented workshops and organized and hosted festivals. He knows and understands community and student theatre from the inside. He is the proud winner of two acting awards from ACT-CO and another from EODL. For several years he operated a professional murder mystery theatre company that specialized in resort-based murderous weekends. As an adjudicator he has worked at various levels in the Sears Festival, the Meadowvale Music Theatre Festival on three separate occasions, the ACT-CO Festival for two consecutive years (2006/7 & 2007/8), the Eastern Ontario Drama League One Act Play Festival (2008) and the Theatre Ontario Festival (2009). He enjoys developing a dialogue with practitioners in his adjudications, exploring the triumphs and challenges of community and student theatre in a rigorous and friendly session of peer review. Chris is available to lead a workshop on sound design, and also enjoys working as a play polisher for spoken-word theatre.

To enhance your theatre experience throughout the festival, there will be public adjudications after each session. The adjudicator will also conduct private reviews with the directors, cast members and crew of each play.

HOSPITALITY SUITE:

A Hospitality Suite (“Green Room”) will be open on Friday and Saturday after the final performances of each evening. These will take place at O’Reilly’s Pub on Friday and at the Perth Restaurant on Saturday. These are both located on Gore Street and both will operate on a “cash only” basis. This is a fun time to relax and enjoy mingling with theatre friends, meeting directors, cast and crew and exchanging thoughts on the day’s plays.  Please see Ticket Sales Information below for details.

THE AWARDS BRUNCH:

The Award Brunch will take place on Sunday, November 13, upstairs at Code’s Mill on the Park – Wilson Street entrance - from 11:00 am. The Award Ceremony will commence after the brunch and is always an exciting time. The Adjudicator announces the individuals or groups whom he considered for the 13 awards, and then announces the winner for each category.

THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD:

Audience members who have attended all nine plays have a major role in selecting their favorite play of the Festival, the winner of The People’s Choice Award. Following the final performance of the Festival on Saturday night, voters complete and place their ballots in ballot boxes in the theatre lobby. The votes are then tabulated and the winner announced during the Awards Ceremony on Sunday.
