Directed by Jeremy Dutton

Award winning drama explores the lines between guilt and innocence, certainty and ... doubt.

It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the schools' strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. As the winds of change are sweeping the American mosaic the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Muller. When Sister James, a young teacher, shares with Sister Aloysius her suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequences.

Director’s Notes:

Father Flynn, Sister Aloysius, Sister James and Mrs. Muller make up the cast of this compelling and introspective play. As the play wraps up we are left with the overwhelming truth that doubt reigns supreme even as we try to make sense of and organise this life. Apowerful portrayal of our sojourn here on earth. A Pulitzer prize for drama in 2005 and three Oscars for the movie Doubt in 2009 bespeak the quality of the play. A definite must see.

Any play that makes us feel, question and be critical of the accepted status quo has surely got to be rated as top drawer art. This play is such art.

Director’s Bio:

Director Jeremy Dutton has spent the past 44 years involved in just about every aspect of amateur theatre. He accepts that Doubt will be one of his greatest challenges and he looks forward to finding a cast for Doubt. Once the great play has been chosen and an equally great cast has been gathered together then the work begins !  He anticipates that the Perth audiences will be thrilled with the Studio Theatre's production of John Patrick Shanley's  Doubt-A Parable.
